The Penalties for DUI/DWI in New York & New Jersey
The penalties for DUI/DWI in New York and New Jersey often include fines, jail time, and license suspensions/revocations. The severity of penalties depends on whether an offense has been repeated, among other factors.
A first-time DWAI in New York can result in a fine of up to $500, 15 days in jail, and a 90-day license suspension. The fines and jail time increase to as much as $1,500 and 180 days for second and third offenses. Repeat DWAI convictions also come with a six-month license revocation.
For DWI in New York, the penalties range from $500 to $10,000 in fines and one to four years of incarceration. A conviction will also lead the state to revoke licenses for six months or longer.
New Jersey’s DUI/DWI penalties include fines of up to $1,000, imprisonment between 30 and 180 days, and license forfeiture/suspension.
